The Importance of Eating Breakfast

By Dr Emily Wiggins & Dr Kelcie Rosendhal

In our fast-paced world, breakfast often takes a back seat as we rush to start our day. Some may even skip it altogether in the pursuit of saving time, not feeling hungry or cutting calories.

However, from our perspective breakfast is a crucial part of your daily routine that should not be overlooked. In this blog post, we will explore the importance of eating breakfast from a naturopathic standpoint and how it can be a valuable component of your holistic health journey.

Nourishing the Body

One of our main goals is supporting the body's innate ability to restore and maintain health. Nutrition is the first place to start with that.

Breakfast serves as the foundation for a day filled with energy, focus, and vitality. When you eat breakfast, you are essentially "breaking the fast" that your body has undergone during the night. Breakfast provides essential nutrients, including carbohydrates, protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals, that your body needs to function optimally. Skipping breakfast deprives your body of these essential nutrients, making it harder for your body to maintain balance and repair itself.

Balancing Blood Sugar

Blood sugar balance is an essential aspect of nourishing your body and calming your nervous system. Eating a well-balanced breakfast can help regulate blood sugar levels throughout the day.

When you skip breakfast, your blood sugar can drop, leading to fatigue, irritability, and cravings for sugary or high-calorie foods later in the day. This rollercoaster of blood sugar levels can contribute to weight gain, insulin resistance, and a higher risk of chronic diseases.

Additionally, consuming a breakfast that includes complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains and fiber, can lead to more sustained energy levels and help prevent the rapid spikes and crashes in blood sugar that often follow high-sugar, processed breakfasts.

Enhancing Metabolism

Breakfast also plays a crucial role in kickstarting your metabolism.

When you eat a balanced morning meal, your body recognizes that it's time to start burning calories and converting food into energy. This "kickstart" helps your body function more efficiently throughout the day, ultimately supporting weight management and overall health.

Supporting Digestion

Eating breakfast also promotes healthy digestion.

It signals to your body that it's time to activate digestive enzymes and prepares the gastrointestinal system to process the food you consume. This allows your body to absorb nutrients more effectively, aiding in the overall maintenance of good health.

Mental Clarity and Emotional Well-Being

It’s well accepted there is a strong connection between the mind and the body. A nutritious breakfast can improve mental clarity, focus, and emotional well-being.

By providing your brain with the necessary nutrients it needs to function optimally, you are more likely to experience improved concentration and a positive outlook on the day ahead.

Creating a Nourishing Breakfast

So, what does an ideal breakfast look like? Here are some general guidelines:

  • Ideally, have your breakfast within an hour of waking up.

  • Choose whole, unprocessed foods: Opt for foods that are as close to their natural state as possible. Whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and pasture-raised animal sources of protein are excellent choices.

  • Include protein: Protein is essential for maintaining satiety and balancing blood sugar levels. The goal is to eat 30g protein at breakfast. Sources like eggs, lean meats, tofu, and plant-based options like legumes and nuts can be part of a balanced breakfast.

  • Embrace healthy fats: Incorporate sources of healthy fats, such as avocados, nuts, and seeds. These fats support brain health and provide sustained energy.

  • Fiber-rich foods: High-fiber foods like whole grains, fruits, and vegetables promote healthy digestion and long-lasting fullness.

  • Hydrate: Begin your day with a glass of water or herbal tea to rehydrate your body after a night's sleep.
